Patty Karpinski and her daughter Julia have adopted three cats that now live in domestic bliss in their home. From top to bottom, the kitties are Lindsey, the calico, Latte, the mom, and Aramis, the orange boy.

At 7 AM, I was in the lobby of PAWS Lurie Clinic waiting to have my ten feral cats checked in for their spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations. As always at PAWS, the waiting room is crowded with people and their pets, so I didn’t take much notice when one more person entered the room. She walked to the front desk and left a small closed shoebox on the counter and then turned and left.
There was a bit of commotion behind the desk as the receptionists opened the shoebox. And then Chris, the intake coordinator, was standing in front of me and asking if I could help. He held out the shoebox which was now open and inside was a black kitten.
The kitten was perhaps a day old, about four inches long, with closed eyes and ears flat on his head. He was crying and squirming in the box. The kitten’s umbilical cord was still attached, and he shivered with cold.
But someone had cared about this kitten. The lining of the box was of the softest cotton little girl’s T shirt, and next to the kitten, someone had sewn a tiny red blanket with black paw prints and then added a beaded baby’s rattle. This small life had not been simply abandoned. Whoever had brought him, had wanted to do the right thing.
Nelson, tucked inside my winter coat next to my chest, came home with me that day. He was bottle fed and then learned to drink and later to eat out of a saucer. When he opened his eyes, he saw the huge world of my office. When he cried, I held him, and when he learned to walk, I taught him to play.
Admiral Lord Nelson needed several trips to the veterinarian to help him with his digestive system. That fall, he was the superstar of the feral cat world having been photographed and written about in three local newspapers. When Nelson was old enough for adoption, one of the photographers and his wife and daughter brought Nelson home to love forever.
Admiral Lord Nelson, now Admiral Peabo to his new family, represents all that is good about working to help the feral cats on the streets. This one small kitten brought together a neighborhood of good people who love the animals.

Francie, a feral cat caretaker in Westchester, worked with Triple R Pets to spay/neuter her entire colony of seven ferals.
Here are the cats enjoying a winter day all safe and warm and healthy in their outside shelter filled with warm straw. Francie and her husband built the shelter and the cat family moved right in.
Thanks Francie for caring about the outside cats.

Dear Triple R Pets’ Foster Mom,
Just writing to tell you that Slick and Charmer are very happy, playful and full of zeal! They love wrestling on top of us while we are asleep in bed. They attack our feet when we sleep. Charmer wakes me up at 5 am so I can get to work on time. For some reason, he never wakes my wife up!

Frankie (AKA Yankee) was rescued as a kitten from a garage in the Woodlawn area of Chicago. He was adopted by the Netzel family and is now best friends with his new sister, Veronica.

We got a new camera for Christmas, so we can take some good pictures of our girl, Star, and send them to you. Star had a wonderful Christmas. She and her two sisters, Sissie and Frida got lots of stuff from Santa!! I thank you every day for rescuing Star, and giving her to us. She is a joy, and we are having so much fun with her.
Of course the best times of the day are when we get “kitty love” from Star. Yes, she still gives us kitty kisses!

Dave was moving out of his parents’ home, and he wanted to adopt two cats and give them a home in his new place. Triple R Pets had four kittens from the same litter ready for adoption. Dave’s parents, Mike and Bev, went with Dave to meet his two new kittens. Dave adopted Midnight Blues and Graystone, but the next day his mom and dad returned to adopt the other two kittens, Lonesome Dove and Cowboy! Keeping families together is what it’s all about!

Jack and Ruby are brother and sister, but you’d never know to look at them! Ruby is so tiny and Jack, well, Jack is very large.
JoEllen, their new mom, writes us that Jack has just about doubled in size since his adoption. “Ruby is still the tiniest little thing. She arrived here so scared. She stayed under the bed with her tail between her legs for a few days. Then one day, she just strolled downstairs with her tail flying high. I guess she decided we were all acceptable! ! ! !”
I am so amazed at the personalities and gentle behavior of both these cats. They are the best of friends and the most wonderful companions for me.
JoEllen also is the caretaker of the feral cat colony into which Jack and Ruby were born. Their mom still lives outside and is well cared for by JoEllen.

I would like to thank you and your organization for your generous donation to my local pet hospital and my family. An emergency arose on March 10th, when Emma, our Jack Russell/Shih Tzu decided that she wanted a piece of shrimp that was attached to a fish hook. Needless to say, she swallowed the hook too. I called my local vets office, but because it was after hours, I received their recording referring me to Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Biloxi.
I rushed to meet my husband, picked up Emma, and off I went to Biloxi, about 45 minutes away. (which seemed like 2 hours!!!) I had already called and spoken to then receptionist who was very nice and told me to get her on over. Little did I know how much it was going to cost. The doctor and nurses i
were very helpful and worked with we through my crying as I was wondering how in the world I was going to pay for this when they gave me an estimate!! I cried more and explained that We only had one job in the household right now and was waiting on my husband to have a hearing from Social Security and I continued to cry!!! At this point all I could think of was that I was going to have to put her to sleep because I couldn’t pay for the surgery.
Here come Dr. McDonald and she explains to me that she has made a phone call, but since it is so late, (9pm or so) it may be morning be for she hears back. About that time, the nurse came in and it was you, and the rest is history!!!
The receptionist called this afternoon to check on Emma. I explained to her that she was doing fine. It has been 8 days, she has a couple of days more before she can get her stitches out then I will talk to my vet about neutering her. The clinic will be referred to everyone that I know also. They seem very caring and knowledgeable.
My family and I can’t thank you enough for your support. We are forever grateful to you. Maybe one day we can return the favor.
God Bless,
Kim and Bobby Zirpola
